SOUR GHERKIN SPROUTS!

the sumter pickling cucumbers were some of the first seeds to germinate, but the mexican sour gherkins (Melothria scabra) are taking forever. i finally spotted some babies today though <3<3

if you’ve never met a sour gherkin, they’re really cute and tasty. the flavor is cucumbery but also a little tart and lemony. they’re about the size of a grape tomato, but have striped green skin, making them look like tiny watermelons. for that reason they’re sometimes called “mouse melons.” PRECIOUS.

i didn’t harvest enough to pickle last year, but my fingers are crossed for this season.

  1. I’ve seen these in a seed catalog…Baker Creek, I think. Anyhow I’ve wanted to try them, so I’m happy to see this post!
